Basic Word Problem in Mathematics

Basic Algebra: Word Problem.

If Psalm is twice as old as Mike and Mike is 2 years older than Ford, how old are they if the sum of their ages is 42?
Solution:
Let
x = age of Mike
2x = age of Psalm
x-2 = age of Ford
Hence,
x + (2x) + (x-2)= 42
4x – 2 = 42
4x = 44
x = 11 > the age of Mike
2x = 22 > the age of Psalm
(x-2) = 9 > the age of Ford.
